A recent report suggests that people may be including more sugar replacements in their diet, as it shows that national sugar consumption is on the decline. The report, entitled Sugar Consumption in Australia: A Statistical Update, was independently researched by market analysis company Green Pool Commodity Specialists. Using data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), they found that the average sugar consumption per capita decreased from 46.26 kilos in 2004 to 41.97 kilos in 2011. In addition, the research also revealed that sugar consumption has fallen approximately 26.4 per cent over the last 60 years. "Our assessment included a rigorous analysis of the data sources and methodology used previously by the ABS in sugar consumption reporting between 1938 and 1999," said Green Pool director Tom McNeill. While fructose had to be excluded from the study due to lack of useable data, all other sugars were researched. "All aspects of sugar consumption in Australia have been incorporated into our calculations - including household use, processed foods and beverages, takeaways, convenience foods and restaurant meals," said Mr McNeill. "Imports and exports of sugar and sugar-containing manufactured foods and beverages were also assessed." These findings may come as welcome news to those who are concerned about sugar consumption in Australia. However, although this report suggests that we are eating less sweetened foods, it doesn't mean we can afford to relax. Sugar still finds its way into a variety of foods and many health experts believe overindulging in sweet treats - especially soft drinks and candy - may be contributing to the rising levels of obesity and diet-related diseases. The good news is, it is easy to cut back on your sugar intake and still enjoy sweet foods and flavours. All you have to do is use a sugar alternative, such as Stevia or Xylitol.
