Could too much sugar cause brain shrinkage?

According to a leading academic from the Australian National University (ANU), people with blood sugar levels in the high end of normal range could be at risk of developing dementia and brain shrinkage. Dr Nicholas Cherbuin is from the Centre of Ageing, Health and Wellbeing at ANU and recently studied 249 people aged between 60 and 64, who did not have diabetes and whose blood sugar levels were considered 'normal'. The participants underwent brain scans once at the beginning of the study, and then again four years later. Dr Cherbuin has now published the results, which revealed an association between brain shrinkage and blood sugar levels at the high end of the normal range. Up until now, there has not been a lot of research of this kind, says Dr Cherbuin. "Numerous studies have shown a link between type 2 diabetes and brain shrinkage and dementia, but we haven't known much about whether people without diabetes with blood sugar on the high end of normal experience these same effects," he explained in a statement issued September 4. He believes that these results may suggest that health experts need to "re-evaluate the concept of normal blood sugar levels and the definition of diabetes". Further research is needed before any conclusions can be made, but this study does serve as a reminder of the possible risks that high blood sugar levels can bring. If you are looking to get a better handle on these levels then it may be worth speaking to your doctor and getting tested, and then consulting a nutritionist to help understand your body's unique nutritional needs. However, a good place to start may be in reducing your sugar intake. Stevia is referred to by many as a healthy sugar because it is low in calories and contains no artificial ingredients like aspartame. Stevia extract can be used in a variety of foods, from hot drinks and cold beverages to baking and sprinkled over cereal. It is sweet but without the health hazards of sugar, making it a great natural alternative for the health conscious.
