If you search the web, you can find some fantastic information about natural sweeteners. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of myths out there – and many of them are false. Let’s look at three of the most common myths about natural sweeteners.
Myth #1: All sugar replacements are bad for you
False! In fact, natural sweeteners are what we like to call “healthy sugar”, because they are a source of sweetness, but without the extra kilos on your waistline, the diabetes risk or even the tooth decay. It’s important to understand the difference between natural sweeteners, which come straight from nature, and artificial sweeteners, which are created in a laboratory. Artificial sweeteners like Aspartame can contain harmful additives that have been known to be detrimental to health and wellbeing. But natural sweeteners like Stevia and Xylitol are not chemically altered to be sweet and delicious – they just come that way!
Myth #2: Stevia doesn’t taste as nice as sugar
We disagree! Although most Stevia doesn’t taste exactly like sugar, good pure Stevia is refined to perfection, leaving little, or, no after-taste at all. Remember though that your taste buds will be used to the taste of sugar and when presented with a new substance, such as Stevia, they will not necessarily associate it with sugar. It may take a little while for your taste buds to adapt to that new taste. In fact, we bet that in a blind test you won’t be able to tell the difference between our Stevia and your sugar… it’s that good! The only difference is that Stevia is 250 to 450 times as sweet as sugar, which means you’ll need a whole lot less of it – oh, and of course the fact that it comes without the extra calories, tooth decay and diabetes risk…
Myth #3: Using sugar replacements is a hassle
Using sugar replacements takes a bit of getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it’s easy. We even have a handy Stevia conversion chart on our website to help you out. In the past, Stevia only came in powder form – however, today it is available as a powder, granulated and liquid. For example, if you’re used to adding sugar to your coffee, you can now use simply add a few drops of liquid SweetLeaf Stevia, which comes with an easy-to-use home dropper to help you measure the right amount. Flavoured SweetLeaf Stevia is also a fun way for kids to experiment with food and make their own creations, like adding Rootbeer to sparkling water, Vanilla Crème to yoghurt and Chocolate to milk. Do you have a sweet tooth? Naturally Sweet Stevia and Naturally Sweet Xylitol are both natural sugar replacements that are high in taste yet low in calories. Add them to hot drinks, baked goods and more!
